Geistfinance: Withdraw and Repay Mode in 2023

Geist Finance’s lending market on Fantom reenabled only withdrawals and loan repayments on July 9, 2023, following a contract pause on July 6. New lending and borrowing remained closed. On July 14, 2023, the team announced Geist would not reopen.

Operations in the restricted mode

The limited reopening on July 9, 2023 restored two functions for existing positions.

Withdrawal
Removal of assets previously supplied to Geist’s lending pool.
Repayment
Payment toward an existing borrowing balance.
New deposits and borrowing
Additional deposits and new loans were outside the withdraw and repay only mode.

The historical mode describes the functions reenabled at that time. It does not establish that a particular withdrawal succeeded or that either function remains accessible today.

The limit on reopening

Multichain-bridged collateral had lost value while Chainlink feeds continued tracking the underlying assets’ reference prices. In its July 14, 2023 announcement , the Geist Finance team said reopening borrowing would create bad debt for lenders of unaffected assets such as FTM and Magic Internet Money (MIM). The team also stated that Chainlink’s feeds had worked as intended.

Withdrawal access and recovery of a token’s backing were separate issues. Reenabling a withdrawal function did not restore the missing backing of Multichain-bridged assets or promise recovery at their earlier value.

A hypothetical repayment after the pause

Consider a hypothetical account history containing a Geist loan on Fantom opened on July 5, 2023, and a completed repayment on July 10, 2023. The repayment falls after the documented July 9 reopening of repayment functions. These records therefore fit the restricted mode; they provide no evidence that new lending restarted.

This interpretation requires both entries to identify the same existing loan and the repayment entry to represent a completed transaction. A historical interface showing the mode name alone would not establish those events.
